The Press and The President and Enemies and Frenemies

Two groups of people I would never want to piss off are librarians and the press. They both wield great power and protect our access to information. Try and stop 'em. You know you're gonna lose... but someone always tries.

Journalists in Uganda have imposed a news blackout on the East African country's government in protest against what they described as rising brutality against reports covering demonstrations over high prices.

"We are sick and tired of unprovoked police brutality against us as we go about our work," Ssebagala Wokuri, an official at the Human Right Network for Journalists told reporters on [13th May 2011].

Ever the charmer, President Museveni gives his view:

"The media houses both local and international such as Al-Jazeera, the BBC and Daily Monitor and NTV are enemies of Uganda's recovery and they will be treated as such."

Recovery. The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem. Then you blame the media and call them your enemy.

But do you know what you really have to watch out for? Frenemies.
